IOHANNIS DE BASILEA OESA, Lectura super Primum Librum Sententiarum, ed. MARCOLINO, BRÎNZEI, OSER -GROTE , vol. 1, pp. 24, 27, 72. For a look at John of Cusin as Eltville’s source, see I. CURUȚ , “What Does God Know? James of Eltville and his Fellow Cistercians on Divine Knowledge,” in The Cistercian James of Eltville (†1393) Author at Paris and Authority at Vienna, ed. M. BRÎNZEI, C. COURTENAY, “James of Eltville, O.Cist., His Fellow sententiarii in 1369–70, and His Influence on Contemporaries,” in The Cistercian James of Eltville (†1393) Author at Paris and Authority at Vienna, ed. M. BRÎNZEI, C. SCHABEL (Studia Sententiarum, 3), Turnhout 2018, pp. 21, 31. Cusin’s commentary on the Sentences does not survive, but it is listed, among his other works, in A. CALMET , Bibliothèque lorraine, ou Histoire des hommes illustres qui ont fleuri en Lorraine, Nancy 1751, col. 317: “1. Commentaria in 5 libros Sententiarum, 2. Postilla in 15 priora Capita Matthaei, 3. Postilla in Epistolam ad Titum, 4. Sermones de tempore, de sanctis, et ad clerum, 5. Directorium Confessorum.” We can remark the unusual “in 5 libros Sententiarum,” without necessarily being able to explain it beyond a typographical error. James of Eltville’s commentary on the Sentences (book 1) will have a forthcoming edition supervised by M. Brînzei and C. Schabel. K ÄPELLI, Scriptores 2, pp. 466-477. vesperae.author.education | John of Cusin enjoys little attention in the modern research, which makes his biography rather scarce, most of it being linked to John Hiltalingen of Basel’s and James of Eltville’s Sentences commentaries, the latter probably taking Cusin as a source from the former. This can be in part understood as a result of his lost commentary on the Sentences, even though some smaller writings have survived. The uncertainty regarding the date of his inception could also be traced back to this situation, as none of the suggestions rely on clear evidence. As such, Kaluza uses Quetif’s and Echard’s catalogue to propose 1369, and Marcolino uses Löhr and Käpelli to date it to 1368, even though Käpelli himself only 132 approximates “before 1368” to be the year he opposed Hiltalingen. Working around the lack of primary documents for his inception, what we can do is provide all the accessible evidence there is. |
